What type of lock do I have, what do I need to secure my house and what do you provide? Are very common queries that are raised. Here at locksmiths-westmidlands we provide what we consider to be good quality reliable locks that we have used for many years these include ERA, Ultion, Brisant, Schlosser & Yale. All Dead locks and sash locks fitted by us are insurance rated British Standard locks to BS – 3621. Some insurance companies now insist on this standard of lock fitting to timber doors.What you need for your property depends on what type of door you have fitted.

Timber doors

Front Doors

A typical timber front door will no doubt have a cylinder night latch (yale type of lock) fitted at around shoulder height. There may also be an additional dead lock fitted at around hip height.

It is strongly recommended to have an additional dead lock fitted for added security, if you only currently have a yale lock think about having a dead lock fitted. If you’re not sure go and have a look – one lock or two?

Rear Doors

A typical timber rear door probably located in the kitchen or utility room will have some form of glass panel and a sash lock fitted at hip height. The difference between this lock and a dead lock, a sash lock can be closed and held in place by a latch without the need to lock it fully. Locking the door secures it fully when not in use.)

uPVC doors

Typically a uPVC door (plastic) consists of a door and door frame with a multi point locking mechanism. This operates by lifting the handle to engage all of the locks then turning a key in the lock to secure it. These can be very strong however they are only as strong as their weakest point which is usually the euro cylinder (the bit where you put your key).

What we recommend and try to fit as a standard is an anti snap, anti drill and anti pick euro cylinder. These are of far better quality than a standard cylinder and will help protect the property from break-ins. As we try to encourage the use of these lock we try to keep these as cost effective as possible.

British Standard cylinders can be fitted if requested, which again we would encourage if your budget stretched to it, however these locks are far more expense then the locks we fit as standard.

Composite doors

These differ from uPVC doors in that they have a solid timber core covered in either fibreglass, aluminium or in some cases steel. These are very strong doors and can be fitted with either multi-point locking mechanisms with a euro cylinder or a sash type of lock.

5 lever dead locks some times known as chubb locks, usually come in several standards forms, either a standard 3 lever locks, 5 lever lock or a British Standard (BS) 5 lever certified lock.

BS locks are certified to BS 3621/2004 or 2007, have as a minimum 5 levers, 20mm dead bolt, anti-pick and anti-drill protection each lock is individual kite marked. These locks are sometimes specified by some home insurance companies and recommended by the police.

Dead locks unlike sash/mortise locks are not made to be used with lever handles. They can however be used in conjunction with cylinder night latches (Yale locks) on front or rear doors for added protection and security.

All locks fitted by us are a minimum of BS3621 where ever applicable – make sure you get what you pay for when seeking quotes.

5 lever locks some times known as sash locks, mortise locks or even chubb locks, usually come in several standards forms, either 3 lever locks, standard 5 lever lock or a British Standard (BS) 5 lever certified lock.

BS locks are certified to BS 3621/2004 or 2007, have as a minimum 5 levers, 20mm dead bolt, anti-pick, anti-drill protection and a standard latch each lock is individual kite marked. These locks are sometimes specified by some home insurance companies and recommended by the police.

Sash/mortise locks are made to be used with standard ironmongery, lever handles of your choice.

All locks fitted by us are a minimum of BS3621 where ever applicable – make sure you get what you pay for.

Cylinder night latches are most commonly known as Yale locks in fact most people would have no idea what a cylinder night latch was if you were to ask – it’s a Yale lock!

Like most locks these come in two standard forms, either a medium security lock non-BS or as a high security lock certified to BS 3621:

The majority of these lock that are fitted are the medium security lock, usually with an additional mortise/sash dead lock fitted lower down the door for added security and protection.

Both types of lock are suitable for use on any timber external door, this type of lock will require a key to open it at all times, so make sure the door doesn’t close behind you by mistake when you take the rubbish out or you’ll be stuck outside.

As a standard we fit the medium security non BS locks. BS 3621: can be fitted if requested. We can also replace the cylinder only (the key part of the lock) if you have lost the keys or are on a tight budget.

Euro LockEuro lock

Euro cylinders are those funny keyhole shaped objects usually sticking out of a uPVC door that operate the locking mechanism.

They come in 5 and 6 pin forms (that’s the number of pins that have to be engaged to open the lock) and either keyed both sides or externally key operated and an internal thumb turn (no key from the inside, usually fitted in blocks of flats).

Like all locks these can be either non British Standard or British Standard certified locks. Most euro cylinders that are fitted are non British Standard – go on check your new uPVC door is it kite marked?

British standard cylinders are kite marked as all BS certified products and feature anti-drill, anti pick, anti-bump protection and snap resistant.

As a standard we fit anti pick, anti drill and anti snap euro cylinders. Though not British Standard they offer more protection then a standard lock. If you are looking at replacing the cylinders to your doors check what you’re getting, we advise against standard euro cylinders as they offer very little protection from break-ins.

A new range of BS locks has recently been developed which is secure by design, anti-bump, anti-pick and snap resistant. These can even be suited so one key fits all your new locks.

Digital locksDigital locks

Push button locks come as either mechanical or electronic.

There are various forms of these digital locks available for fitting by us from the simple surface mounted lock to the heavy duty push button locks dependant on the location and security required.

Most of these locks have a 4-10 digit code that can be changed quickly and easily if required.

Key safeKey safe

Key safes are becoming more and more popular with people that need regular visits from relatives, friends and nursing staff, district nurses and the like, but are unable to get to the front door easily.

A keysafe is fitted on an outside wall preferably in a discreet location where a set of keys to the front door can be left. Anyone visiting that needs access to the property is given the combination code for the lock which enables them to retrieve the keys and let themselves in.

Combination codes can be changed easily if required.

There are several option that we fit either the smaller option that holds 5 household keys, the large option that holds 8 keys or the high security reinforced keysafe.
